The general orientation accorded was detailed, it involved an understanding of the organization’s mission, its strategy, the processes, policies including safety and compensation and the various departments. The Human Resource Department was responsible for the orientation. After a detailed tour of the firm, the HR defined my role including the specific job activities to be performed, and whom to report to. The idea behind the formation of Neighbour To Family Inc. was taking a new approach to foster care, one that would help troubled children and families instead of making the situation worse for them. The program's mission is to revolutionize foster care by keeping siblings together while building healthier families and stronger communities. From this mission, the firm derives its core values which include engaging and supporting families, reducing the potential risk of children in their care, keeping siblings together for child well-being and family continuity, maintaining stable placement that lead to permanent families and ensuring fidelity to evidence-based practice and accreditation standards. The main programs offered include sibling foster care, clinical services, parenting programs, and family preservation and stabilization services.
With nearly 500000 children in the United States being under foster care, Neighbour to Family’s signature service provides evidence-based, specialized care to siblings groups. Emphasis is given to achieving permanency goals for children within twelve months of placement. NTF deals with siblings between the ages of 0-21 who are in the custody of the child welfare system apart permanency and specialized care for children in foster care. NTF also works towards preventing the placement of abused and neglected children into foster care through safety management and family support services, this means that the program also targets families in crisis for restoration.

Through its programs, NFT has been able to prevent unnecessary placement of children into out of home care through stabilizing families that are in crisis and, therefore, put children at imminent risk for out of home placement by diffusing the ongoing risk and safety factors. The program has been able to do this by engaging with the family, establishing a partnership and supporting the family while equipping them with the necessary resources to properly care for their children. To achieve this, NFT has nurtured parenting classes and services whose main aim is to empower the family to achieve an understanding of the original reasons that led to the crisis. For siblings in foster care, NFT has been able to facilitate placing siblings together under the same care (single home) boosting long-lasting relationships and high levels of stabilities. The program however sometimes has a hard time when it comes to stabilizing families that may be in crisis. The family members sometimes may not be willing to go through the process of making the situation at their homes better. It may be difficult to enhance positive thinking and build resiliency when family members are not willing to commit to the program.
As an intern, my roles include helping the case manager, family advocacy and the recruitment of foster parents. This entails working closely with family members and potential foster parents to eliminate issues in existing families as well as facilitate training for parents willing to care for children.
