Tony has a problem with Linda, his protégé. He frequently complains about her performance and constantly points out her mistakes. Linda on the other hand takes Tony’s criticism lightly and “shrugs it off” making Tony feel ignored and see it fit to put Linda on a four-month sabbatical.
Phyllis is superior in rank to both Tony and Linda and as such takes the position of the negotiator. Her interest is in seeing a fruitful negotiation that retains both parties at their work as finding replacements would cost more time and resources. Tony is more powerful of the two, as he already sent Linda to a sabbatical. He would like Linda’s work to meet his high standards. Linda would like ample working conditions without many demands as she already has a lot of work to handle in the office.

One solution I that Linda would meet Tony’s interests but should be reduced for her workload or given longer deadlines. Tony could also agree to give Linda time to adjust and discuss with her areas that need correction prior to submission of work. Phyllis could also step in and put Linda and Tony in different departments to avoid further misunderstandings.
Phyllis’ best alternative to negotiating agreement would be to suspend both Tony and/or Linda if there is no successful negotiation or to put them in different departments. Tony’s would be to hire a new replacement for Linda after her sabbatical. Linda’s B.A.T.N.A. would be to get a new job.
If the dispute is not resolved in time Phyllis would lose two important people in her workforce. Tony’s work would never be up to standard and he would have to eventually lay Linda off, and waste time getting a replacement. Linda on the other hand will remain overworked and later have to take her time and find a new job.
The most viable solution is to have Linda work at Tony’s standards and be given space and a lighter work load. This takes into consideration both parties’ interests and is timely. The other two would take time to eventually reach a balance.I would use professional standards and efficiency to test if the resolution is fair to both parties.
