The mechanisms of American politics are complex and, therefore, not easy to understand. However, what interests me most about American politics is the role played by interest groups and lobbyist groups in influencing the development and establishment of governmental policies that align with the objectives of their members. It has come to my attention that lobbyists and interest groups, such as the nursing union (American Nursing Association) has the power and strength to shape politics in the American healthcare industry. I have come to realize that elected politicians and the government only act as representatives of the people. Even though representatives act as if they have the power to control the future direction of the workings of a nation, the real power is in the hands of ordinary American citizens. However, citizens will have the ability to influence policies through unity. The power and strength of numbers primarily make unions have a say in American politics. Through their numbers, unions can negotiate an enforceable contract with the government to improve the working conditions of their members.
Nursing is a noble profession that is faced with a myriad of challenges. I will join a union in my future endeavors as a nurse and take an active role in addressing problems of staffing, long working hours, and workplace violence that nurses frequently face in the course service delivery. I will take an active role in the union and work my way up as a leader advocating for a better working environment for all nurses in the healthcare industry. Solving the issues faced by nurses not only benefits them but is also a step towards improving patient outcomes. American politics may influence nursing either positively or negatively. It is, therefore, the duty of the nurses union to fight for the rights of their members by pushing the government towards formulating policies that will benefit nurses.
