The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is a comprehensive law on civil rights that was aimed at addressing the unique needs of individuals with disability. It was aimed at the elimination of discrimination against such individuals. Such discrimination may be in terms of education, access to employment, access to public facilities and many other areas where such individuals may be discriminated against on the bases of their condition. Before the passing of the law, many individuals with disability lacked access to equal resources and opportunities as compared to individuals who were not disabled (Perritt, 2018).
B. Pioneers of the act
The National Council on Disability had proposed the development of the legislation in 1986. It is this council that drafted the first version of the bill which was then sent to the parliament for debate and amendments. It was introduced in the Senate in 1988. The bill was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 and later amended in 2008 (Jasper, 2008).

C. Purpose of the law and its amendments
The main purpose of the American with disabilities act was to prohibit discrimination of people with disability based on that condition. As a result, the law ensured that the disabled had equal access to employment, public facilities and human right and dignity as compared to individuals who were not disabled. The act equally prohibited any discrimination of people with disability when it comes to the access to telecommunications and accommodations. Through the enactment of this law, the social life of the disabled was thus significantly enhanced. The act was amended in 2008. The amendments were made with an aim of making courts responsible for interpreting the law on whether the complainants had been discriminated and not merely focusing on whether they are disabled. The determination of disability should not be a threshold issue but rather the fact whether the person was discriminated or not should lay the bases of judgment (Jasper, 2008).
