Description

The piece of art is ‘The Pink Sky’, and it was drawn by an artist named Dushyant Patel in 2016. It is one of the fantastic pieces of art found in the Archer Art Gallery located in Ahmedabad, India. The artist used oil on canvas medium in the painting, which implies that he used oil to paint on canvas material. Oil is preferred as an art medium because it is durable, takes some time to dry and does not alter the colors used to paint. It also allows the artist to rework or edit it as desired. The picture shows a man sitting with what seems to be a dinner table in front of him. The table has some food and drinks and he appears to be enjoying at the moment. Also, some candles have just been put off since they seem to be generating some smoke. In the vicinity is the sky, presented in pink color and grassland that appears to be in an arid land. The subject matter is a person, which, therefore, means that the picture is in the landscape orientation.

Analysis

The foreground of the picture represents the man enjoying a meal, and the middle ground is a rural setting with brown grass while the background is a pink sky. The artist has arranged the picture by presenting the man at the forefront in a small degree and presenting the scene, the pink sky, in a larger view, therefore, enabling it to be seen despite its position, which shows contrast. The colors used include pink, brown, white, grey, and some minor traces of green. The artist has used different shapes, including the rectangular sky and grassland, and the table is presented in three dimensions. Some of the organic forms that have been used include that of the person, glass, and candles. However, there are no leading lines in the picture. The artist also uses a sense of space by presenting the sky to be very far.

Interpretation

The picture’s title is “The Pink Sky,” which is appropriate to the image since it presents that exact scene, shown in a larger view, but in the background. I first noticed the pink sky, while the aspect that I noticed last is the grassland placed in the middle ground. The relationship between what I see first and last is that the atmosphere has been presented in a bright clear, pink, and large view while the grassland is shown in the foreground. Looking at this sky makes me feel that something is amiss since the sky is pink instead of blue, and the man seems sad while holding his glass of wine. Besides, the man appears to be having dinner in an unsuitable setting for the occasion, in a deserted field. On the other side of the table is an empty seat which means that he could have been expecting a companion who failed to turn up. Therefore, it can be argued that the artist is trying to tell the audience that all other things can go wrong when one thing goes amiss, given that the candles also went off and the sky turned pink.

Judgement

I like how the artist uses the aspect of a pink sky to present the meaning of the picture. Another plus for the artist is bringing the sky in a large view to attract the viewer’s attention. Therefore, the artist successfully presented the message through his choice of colors and his picture arrangement. However, one of the artist’s failure is placing the person in a small view which requires one to zoom in for clarity, yet there is a lot of important information that the person depicts. Another factor that I dislike about the artwork is the artist’s failure to use leading lines, a style that is crucial in leading a viewer to a particular scene, in this case, the sky.
