Method
Subjects
Common name – monkey.
Latin name – Simiiformes.
Sex – female (lactating)
Procedure
The observation process involved a total of 3 hours, from 8 a.m to 11 a.m the same day. It occurred at a local wildlife park. The observational method that was used is scan sampling. The technique focused on observing all the monkey's specific activities over the entire period spent at the park. The sampling technique involves evaluating the animal after regular intervals that can average between 5 to 15 minutes.
The date was on Saturday, 10th July 2021. The weather was cold, with temperatures averaging at 24 degrees Celcius. The observation occurred outdoors as the monkey was in an outdoor cage. The location was Central Park Zoo, which provides a safe and excellent environment for animal observation purposes.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
The specific behaviors and activities the animal was involved in include:
Rest – the monkey either rested on a secluded section of the tree or the cage. The rest was sometimes accompanied by grooming from other monkeys.
Feeding – the monkey fed on leaves, fruits, and food stuffs that visitors of the park shared illegally.
Moving/playing – the monkey moved around the cage while hoisting the baby around their belly while playing with other monkeys.
Results
The observation process recorded various activities the animal was participating in during the entire time. First, the monkey spent most of their time resting, which is typical behavior even in monkeys that live out in the wild. The rest occurred along with activities such as grooming and behavior such as play.
The monkey also fed on various food types, and it occasionally shared the food with its offspring. However, the offspring mostly fed on the milk produced by its mother. The food the lactating monkey consumed included leaves, bugs, and various other types of food.
During the rest period, the monkey most spent most of their time in a secluded environment with other females. It is a social behavior that helps strengthen the bond between the lactating monkeys in the park.
Discussion
The monkey spent over half of its time resting, which is typical behavior among primates. It is important for animals to rest in order to conserve energy (Foley, 2021). The monkey also spent a considerable amount of time playing with other monkeys. This is vital as it helps to enhance social bonds between the animals as monkeys are social animals (Mielke et al., 2018). Social bonds in primates are viral for resource sharing.
