House Bill 1337 was passed into law in 2018 by the Governor of Florida that changed Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner to more advanced work roles termed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). According to the new law, the state was able to move nearer the U.S. standard APRN title, the acknowledgment of all 4 APRN roles, and licensure. The four roles include certified registered nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner, certified nurse-midwife, and clinical nurse specialist.

There are two paths to becoming a nurse practitioner in the State of Florida. One can get a Master’s degree in nursing in advanced practice nursing or earn a doctorate degree in nursing. Average requirements for Graduate-Level schooling include at least 500 hours of clinical hours, forty to fifty credits for credit hours, and up to three years of full-time study ( BND, 2019). For a doctoral nurse practitioner degree, one needs a combination of a master’s degree and ninety credit hours. More than 1,000 clinical hours are also required and at least five to six years after a bachelor’s degree ( BND, 2019). Participants at both levels get rigorous experience in clinical care and diagnosis, but students pursuing the doctoral option take a more demanding systemic approach to healthcare . However, there are demanding clinical requirements in both cases. Graduate students complete at least 500 hours of clinical work, while doctoral students need more than 1000 hours of clinical work.

APRNs are required to have a practice relationship with a physician in the State of Florida. This is in the form of general supervision by a dentist or a physician. The degree and manner of general supervision are reached by the physician and the APRN. It must be explicitly recognized in the written protocol presented to the board of nursing in Florida and is proper for prudent health care providers under the same circumstances. Those are the specifications that must be followed. The protocol is a framework for the degree and method of supervision and includes the Nursing Practitioner’s description plus physician’s duties, the Nursing Practitioner’s management sectors, and procedures and situations for ascertaining when the direct assessment by the physician is required. Nursing Practitioners are also acknowledged as primary care providers in this state.

All APRNs licensed in the State of Florida are in a twenty-four-month renewal cycle and is mandatory to complete twenty-four hours of proper continuing education every renewal phase ( BND, 2019). The board of nursing in Florida requires the following for the license to be renewed; The department renews your license upon receiving completed CE requirements, a completed renewal application, a mandatory fee, an NP’s present-day primary place of practice address, and a completed financial responsibility form. For licensees who were supposed to be nationally certified, during original licensure, they must provide a copy of their current national certification.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners advocates that Advanced Practice Registered Nurse to be given unlimited prescriptive authority, including dispensing privileges, within their area of practice. Florida has the unfortunate dissimilarity with other states. It does not authorize advanced practice registered nurses to provide prescription of controlled substances (Kaplan, 2016). There is a requirement for supervised practice in prescribing before the authority to prescribe is approved.

The board of nursing in Florida requires a Master’s degree in nursing in advanced practice nursing or earn a doctorate degree in nursing. There is a $110.00 application fee and licensure fee and $100.00 for dispensing license ( BND, 2019). Renewal necessities also include ongoing education activities, finishing a financial responsibility form, finalizing a renewal application, keeping contact and practitioner profile information, and paying the compulsory fees.
