Many schools use various methods of assessments as a means of awarding merits to their students. On the same note, the department of education has come up with different methods of assessments used in both online and traditional class settings. Some people believe that traditional methods of assessments are robust compared to the methods employed in online medium. On the other hand, some professionals also feel that the methods of assessment used for E-learning are less -sufficient in dealing with issues such as cheating and plagiarism. The work discusses all the general matters that affect and support different methods of assessment.

Method and tools for assessment

Traditional classroom usually uses methods such as exams and continuous assessment tests as methods of assessment. Similarly, e-learning also makes use of these similar tests. The difference is that e-learning students have to be in a virtual class to type and turn in their exams immediately while the traditional class students undertake such assessment in the presence of their teachers as supervisors. Some of the tools used for the evaluation in traditional class settings include printed papers and other written materials while e-Learning methods use materials that are online (Gronigen, 2014). On the same note, the traditional methods require that students must complete their syllabus with the help of a teacher while the e-learning system requires students to be more self-centered in the completion of their course materials. The traditional method of learning also makes use of practical tests where students are expected to show their applicability skills. However, the E-learning method does not provide an opportunity for students to take an efficient form of assessment because of the learning environment. Similarly, traditional methods incorporate practicum and work based learning. However, e-learning only allows more of work based learning but less or no internships (Orlando, 2014).

Teachers in a traditional environment have the opportunity to interact with and know their students from a personal perspective while educators in a blended environment cannot be aware of their students from a particular point of view because of the time differences (Orlando, 2014). Similarly, the teachers in a standard classroom setting can observe their students, understand their behavior, and evaluate how the actions affect their performances. On the contrary, educators in an online environment do not have a close association with their students hence cannot assess their behaviors. It also means that they cannot tailor-make materials and learning resources that suit each student to help improve education. The educators in this environment cannot come up with special teaching and learn sessions such assets and group work to help their students improve on their areas of difficulties (Hemby & Wilkinson, 2016).

Teachers in traditional classes have the opportunity to provide a more individualized attention compared to those in an e-learning environment. On the same note, teachers in the traditional learning environment can also create additional resources to supplement their teachings such as charts and other visual and manipulative aids (Hemby & Wilkinson, 2016). On the contrary, online learning teachers do not have the luxury to use manipulative and other visual aids to enhance their teaching because of the learning environment. Similarly, students in traditional learning frameworks get the opportunity to interact with other students through activities such as schools trips and symposiums while the e-learning environment does not.

The e-learning environment provides the students with the possibilities to take their studies during their luxurious times. This means that the student can come up with a timetable that fits their learning needs. On the contrary, traditional education does not provide students with flexible learning sessions (Gronigen, 2014). It means that students have to conform to the provided schedule or miss out on learning activities. On the same note, e-learning grooms learners to be researchers from an early point of learning because the learning environment requires that the students should be involved. However, traditional forms of education only provide research opportunities to students at very limited perspectives. 

Some critics state that it is impossible to access student learning on an e-learning environment. They also indicate that students involve in high rates of plagiarism. Plagiarism is research is a serious offense involving the use of someone’s work without acknowledging. However, research suggests that all students mist read and use the assigned course materials given by their tutors or lecturers. They must also take an individual time to learn on their own, or else they fail in their exam. Therefore, monitoring student learning can only be done through assessments but not observation, hence making it hard to assess their knowledge. Educators can eradicate the aspects of plagiarism by ensuring that they use anti-plagiarism software to check for the same in a completed paper. Many lecturers are currently using this method to mark work handed in by students in all learning environments (Hemby & Wilkinson, 2016). On the other hand, tutors usually make use of tied exams, which gives no room for cheating abilities among Online learning students. They also encourage constant practice and provide the students with the necessary teaching materials to avoid issues of cheating and plagiarism.
