Prior to highlighting the existing similarities and difference between the two terms, it is fundamental to define and describe them. Astronomy is a scientific branch that studies space, celestial objects like planets, and the physical universe wholesomely. On the other hand, astrology can be defined as the study of the motion or movement as well as the relative positioning of the celestial bodies believed to have an influence on human activities and affairs on earth. For this paper, the two phenomena shall be discussed regarding their similarities and differences. Ultimately, a personal opinion shall be provided in a befitting conclusion.
The most fundamental similarity traces its origin in the way the two phenomena originated. Astronomy and astrology both originated in ancient times; it was during this period that people began to understand that heavenly bodies were moving in a specific manner. A second similarity is that both of the phenomena involve the study of the universe and the celestial bodies. However, despite the similarities of origin and study, both fields are different. Astrology is considered to be a pseudoscience which as mentioned earlier believes that celestial bodies and their motion affect the events on earth and human life. In fact, Astrology as a field does not follow any scientific method neither does it conduct experiments to prove its theories. Instead, it only provides and relies on anecdotal evidence for its studies. Moreover, astrologists make use of the twelve zodiac signs in their studies as well as in predicting events on earth.

In contrast, astronomy is considered to be a science that studies the universe and everything outside the planet earth and how they relate to each other. To this end, astronomers make use of scientific research and observation to provide proof for their theories and hypotheses. In contrast to the twelve zodiac signs in astrology, astronomy makes use of the 88 constellations known to man for its studies. In further contrast, Astronomers believe that celestial bodies such as planets have no direct significance or influence regarding human behavior. In addition, they believe that the universe is a total combination of all time, space, energy, and matter, not just planets, the moon and the sun as in astrology.
Conclusion
From the similarities and differences discussed above, my opinion is that the two should be different and separated as they are now. Astrology should be separated from astronomy because it is considered to be mythical and artistic; it does not have a scientific basis. On the contrary, astronomy is a science which is based on research and observation. Furthermore, the two fields do not correlate in terms of the calculations, theories and scientific objectives. For these reasons, astrology should be duly separated from astronomy but should not be cast away since some individuals still rely on astrologers in making personal decisions.
