The Relationships in the Script

When evaluating the relationships between the characters in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, one of the key aspects to note is that the links highlight the importance of family. Mama holds a strong bond concerning the idea of family, as she believes that family members ought to maintain a close connection to each other at all times (Hansberry, 1959). That is a value that she instils on the other characters, including Walter and Beneatha. The play also explores romantic relationships with the focus being on Walter and his wife, Ruth. Although the marriage between these two characters is facing a wide array of problems, Ruth believes in the fact that she would rekindle their love. The reflection of the relationship between these two characters is of great importance towards highlighting the value placed on close personal connections in the play.

Period and Social Status

The play is set within the 1950s attributed to the ability for Lorraine Hansberry to capture the racial dynamics during that period. Being of African American ethnic background, the Younger family finds itself in a position where it encounters a wide array of challenges in dealing with the issue of racial discrimination. Walter Younger is employed as a chauffeur for Mr Arnold, who was a wealthy white American. Ruth Younger, on the other hand, doubled as a housewife and working mother during which time she worked as a domestic worker attributed to the family's unfortunate financial situation. Beneatha is the most educated in the family but does not have formal employment while Travis is just ten years old during that time. Lena Younger (Mama) is shown as having a strong faith and deep religious convictions.
