The Behavior Based Safety (BSB) is majorly used to reflect an approach that is proactive to the prevention of injuries in the workplace. The Behavior Based Safety (BSB) approach is not only a set of procedures for people to follow of a simple tool but also a tool that can be lead to a fully operational safely culture in a workplace. It can also be applied beyond the safety of the people in order to increase the quality and quantity of the performance made in the workplace.

The DO IT Method makes the workers more creative when it comes to solving problems. Using this technique, workers will know how to go about the problems they face in their workplaces without having to get injured in the process. Workers should know when equipment and machinery used in their workplaces are faulty. The D in “DO IT” acronym stands for defining the challenge or problem in the workplace. When a problem is clearly defined, then it can be clearly understood. The O stands for opening one’s mind and effecting techniques that are creative. Opening one’s mind will lead to clear understanding of the problem. The I stands for the identification of proper and most effective solutions. Effective solutions will deal with the problems effectively. The T stands for transforming the condition. Once a problem has been solved we can then transform or change the condition that led to the problem hence curbing it completely.

The BSB approach has numerous benefits. The most important merit is the avoidance of injuries in workplaces. The people will be taught how to avoid risky behavior that could lead to injuries and even demise in the work place. Evaluation will be more effective because BS B is measured by the final result of number or injuries that have occurred in the company. It also builds a positive attitude in the minds of the workers since the company is concerned about their safety. The management gives out incentives and rewards to workers whose performance in not endangering themselves is outstanding.

BSB approach increases the personal responsibility of workers when it comes to their safety. According to a research done by Malgorzata et al. (2015), this sense of responsibility will make them avoid situations and conditions that are harmful to them. It expedites interpersonal teamwork and coaching. The team of workers will look out for each other to ensure all of them are safe as they work. This approach promotes and teaches system thinking. This is the kind of thinking that lets the people understand the association between attitude and behavior. They take a perspective of their work that is a long term and more broad. It maximizes interaction between supervisors and the employees. This eventually results in the development of the skills in employees since they can ask questions freely and learn more. In this way, they can also identify and air out problems in the company and come up with solutions that are effective.

Those working in construction and mining sites make the most of this approach because in this workplaces one can easily get hurt on the job. When one is injured in the workplace, the company faces massive problems such as law suits, compensations and even ruined reputations. The focus of BSB is on what everyone does. It then analyzes the things they do and finally an intervention that is research supported is applied to improve on what they do. These interventions are aimed at improving the safety target mannerisms of the people. These targets are the coaching and training done by trainers, injury investigation, feedback received from the personnel, benefits and incentives given to the people who have avoided injuries and also the focus of supervisors on the behavior of the staff. The interventions are done because behavior changes with the factors present in the outside world.

Employees who put the BSB approach and the DO IT method into practice will ensure their safety as they work. Their behavior and perception of work will also improve immensely due to their open-mindedness as they will not only be able to keep themselves safe but will also ensure the endangering situations are not encountered again.
