Better Readers, Better Writers

Empirical research has affirmed among the various ways of becoming a better writer, one of them is through wide reading. Learners who have developed the habit of reading produce exceptional writing. Reading exposes a person to variety of styles, voices and genres of writing eventually helping a learner improve the standards of writing (Stacia, 2019). The study purposes to validate the statement that better readers ultimately becomes superior writers. The research affirms the statement by giving an example of students in Saudi Arabia. Learners in Saudi Arabia lack linguistic competence which makes them struggle in middle and high school due to their lack of English reading and writing proficiency. Consistent reading would make the Saudi students develop experiences in English topics. Frequent reading method would be instrumental in helping the Saudi student’s record exceptional scores in standardized English tests. Additionally, the habit of learning how to write through reading would nurture and inculcate critical thinking capabilities ultimately making Saudi student both in middle and high school great thinkers (Stacia, 2019). Reading widely would equip the Saudi English Foreign Language learners with a rich vocabulary. The model of teaching is critical in enabling middle school and high school Saudi students recognize language nuances while giving them the ability to make a distinction between poor and quality writing. 

The study further purposes to show that reading would expose the English Second language students to a level of writing that is superior than theirs ultimately leading to substantial improvement. Reading would expose the learners to the English writing tools eventually making them better writers. The habit of wide and consistent reading is vital in enabling a learner make a connection to personal experiences and emotions thereby making them not only better writers but also outstanding communicators. The study demonstrates that more reading would enable Saudi students to develop palate for the myriad tricks invented by exceptional writers over years ( Alrabai, 2016) . Discovering how great writers pull off a writing trick stands to enable the learners to discover themselves and gain experiences that makes them improve their writing proficiency. The standardized English Tests require a masterly, understanding, great capability, knowledge and comprehension of English language. Repeated reading would make English concepts such as spelling and context clues become ingrained in the Saudi students which would make the learners critical thinkers. Through reading, a person can tie separate books and authors and employ dialogue, characters and locale which would greatly improve Saudi learners English. The study seeks to reaffirm the idea that reading would significantly affect the EFL students in Saudi through content creation.

The more a person reads, the more he or she is exposed to arguments, ideas and hypothesis thereby giving one more opinions and thought to put into writing. If Saudi students adopted the ‘better readers better writer model’ the learners would be equipped with skills that can enable make comparison, determine if what they are writing is correct and know the various formatting styles required for one to be an outstanding writer. Practicing regular reading would be an essential tool necessary for grammar improvement thereby advancing the EFL learners ability to write ( Alrabai, 2016) . Additional concepts that would contribute in making Saudi learners critical thinkers are use of syntax, construction techniques and conventions which are also prerequisite in Standardized English tests.
