Conflict in the workplace is inevitable. Employer-employee conflict or conflict between an employee and the management is among the prevalent issues in the workplace. Typically, conflict in the workplace occurs due to a number of factors. For example, it may occur due to incompatibility in regards to work or communication style. Conflict in the workplace may also occur due to personal values and job performance expectations. In the case of BlueBird Hotel, there are a number of key issues facing the hotel in terms of its workforce. This paper will highlight three key issues facing the hotel. The paper will then provide specific recommendations on how to overcome the problems to regain employee trust, retain high performers, and improve profitability.
Low Motivation and Job Satisfaction
One of the critical issues facing the BlueBird Hotel is low motivation and job satisfaction among the employees. According to recent feedback given by the hotel’s guests on TripAdvisor, the employees at the BlueBird Hotel are not happy with their jobs. The feedbacks show that the staff at the hotel are disinterested and that the employees barely smile when serving the guests. In addition, the employees complained about the extra hours they had to put in to train new employees or correct their mistakes. The factors outlined above, including the management’s decision not to consider pay rises and reduce the training budget, contribute to this issue.

According to Varma (2017), low wages, lack of training opportunities, and poor working conditions and environment are some of the factors that contribute to low motivation and job satisfaction. Varma highlights the need to motivate and engage employees in the workplace. According to Varma (2017), employee motivation and engagement contributes to the success of the organization and vice versa. In the case of BlueBird Hotel, this issue may result in fewer bookings, which will, in turn, affect the financial performance of the organization. To motivate and improve employee morale, organizations should train their employees, improve the workplace conditions and environment, and provide payment incentives to their workers (Varma, 2017). Shortage or Lack of Experienced Employees
The second issue affecting the BlueBird Hotel is the shortage of employees and the lack of experienced employees. The assistant manager of the hotel replaced experienced employees with inexperienced ones to reduce costs. Other than mandatory training, such as health and safety, the management does not provide formal training to the new employees. Matemani (2019) acknowledges that the recruitment of unskilled and inexperienced workers adversely affect productivity levels. According to Matemani (2019), organizations may be forced to fill positions with inexperienced workers. As a result, the level of output per employee may fall. This significantly affects the productivity of the employees. Experience employees are move productive than inexperienced employees. Organizational performance or success depends much on its personnel to achieve its objective (Engetou, 2017). Thus, to increase their productivity and improve the workplace environment, organizations should employ experienced candidates and train existing or new ones.
Employee Absence and Turnover
The third issue affecting the hotel is employee absence and turnover. As outlined in the case, the absence rate of employees has increased over the past three months. Moreover, some employees have started to resign. Most of the employees are concerned about the future of their employment, and this is making them seem employment elsewhere. The increase in the absence rate and turnover ratio may negatively affect the success of the hotel. According to Kwame et al. (2017), lack of motivation, lack of good working conditions, lack of training and development, and lack of recognition of employees’ effort are some of the factors that contribute to employee absence and turnover. Employee absence and turnover result in loss of productivity, low organizational success, management frustration, and a decline in service quality (Kwame et al., 2017). Kwame et al. (2017) recommend organizations to recognize employees’ effort and accomplishment, properly treat their employees, enhance employee payment, and promote their employees to increase employee morale and responsibility. This will, in turn, help reduce employee absenteeism and turnover.
Conclusion and Recommendations for Improvement
To resolve the issues of low motivation and job satisfaction, shortage or lack of experienced employees, and employee absence and turnover, BlueBird Hotel should improve the workplace conditions for its employees. BlueBird should hire experienced employees and train new ones. This will help ensure there are enough employees in the workplace. It will also help reduce workplace complaints. BlueBird should also provide payment incentives to its workers. Its decision not to increase the wage pay for its employees may have negatively affected the employees’ morale and motivation. Thus, to enhance their moral, the management should continue providing payment incentives and promoting their employees. Lastly, BlueBird should recognize employees’ effort and accomplishment and properly treat their employees. By implementing the recommendation stated above, BlueBird would be able to motivate its employees, reduce employee absenteeism, and reduce employee turnover.
