I enjoyed Sara Sze’s “Blueprint for a Landscape” (2017) incredible installation as it depicts various elements of New York including birds, trees, scaffolding, and foliage that unfold in a composition that adopt to the energy that people bring to the new commuter hub. We normally use the subway in our everyday activities yet we do not realize how intense experience it is as we descend down the tubes. Sze’s work offers an alternative world where people can change their perspective regarding sense of air, gravity, and light. I really liked how Sze has harnesses and brought up the idea of entering a new world as one descends underground. Moreover, the artwork allows an individual to experience a totally different full comprehensive environment. Notably, it is difficult to create a totally immersive environment that can make an individual feel the difference between the real world and the underground passage as piece of artwork.

I also enjoyed the piece because it brings out new discoveries as people can identify one another as they descend underground; therefore, having a sense of belonging. Across the world, subway stations are the most democratic public spaces where people from different ethnicity, race, and religion utilize. In essence, Sze’s idea allows commuters to know the station and have a sense of ownership, as they would be able to orient themselves regarding the different entry and exit points. In addition, I liked the piece since the subway is arguably the most permanent place an artist can create an artwork, since other public spaces such as buildings are not always permanent. Interestingly, most commuters prefer using the subway, making it an internal organ of the city, thus the painting will continue demonstrating the creativity of a city artist. Generally, although many people may not initially recognize it as an artwork, I was really impressed by Sze’s artwork.
