The department of homeland security (DHS) has a role in protecting borders from the movement of illegal goods, weapons, people, and drugs while being keen to maintain good trade relationships, lawful travel, and economic prosperity. In the recent past, there has been an increased number of issues on the USA's borders with countries like Canada and Mexico (Cammarata, 2021). The problems of illegal immigration and illegal business have been on the rise, and the Department of Homeland Security has put strategies to ensure efficient monitoring of all the border activities and minimize illegal transactions along the borders.

Illegal immigration is one of the significant problems the DHS has to deal with on the borders. The discussion on whether or not to deport individuals living in the USA illegally or unaccompanied minors continues to attract divergent views. Paul Ryan believes that unaccompanied minors should be allowed to stay in the USA as he argues that the children grew up in the USA only to know it as their home (Rubin, 2018). The force to propose a bill to legalize dreamers will meet few acceptances in both houses, giving the challenge to DHS to develop methods that will help strengthen border security. The lack of a formal agreement in the country on handling illegal immigrants continues to be a source of strain to how the DHS should handle unlawful immigrants.

Smuggling and illegal business is another border security issue that faces DHS. The importance of international business between the USA and its neighbors is the one that makes the problem to be of great concern. The DHS should ensure that there are legalized transactions along the borders to prevent the loss to the economy and the passage and trade of illegal weapons that may threaten national security. The discussion on whether or not Congress should fund a wall along the US southern border continues to meet a lot of criticism (Gambler, 2021). Those opposed to the move think that many businesses will be lost, leading to a decline in the economy. The individuals who support the action argue that the move will help the DHS quickly manage the borders and reduce illegal transactions.

In conclusion, the task of DHS to protect the borders meets a lot of challenges, especially regarding the issues of immigration and illegal business. DHS has to comply with the government policies and regulations in the protection of the borders. However, as DHS guards against illicit transactions and immigration on the borders, there is a need to establish a peaceful way of doing the same.
