What Sociology Career Intrigues You the Most; Why?

The career that interests me the most in the field of sociology is substance abuse education. When it comes to drug addiction, everybody is a victim. I once lost a close friend to drug abuse. My friend died in a car crash which he caused. A postmortem that was conducted on his body revealed that he was under the influence of heroin when he caused the accident. The level of heroin in his body showed that he had been using the drug for a while. I would like to secure a career in substance abuse education to save as many people as possible from facing the same fate as my friend.

Review the Average Salary for the Position That Interest You the Most

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2017), individuals working in the substance abuse facilities earn an hourly mean wage of $ 30.72 and annual mean wage of $ 63,900.

What are Some Advantages and Disadvantages of a Career as a Sociologist?

On the negative side, most careers in sociology require a master's or a Ph.D. which may be expensive and time-consuming. Additionally, most sociologists work fulltime leaving little time to advance one’s education or pursue other personal ventures. Additionally, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2017), "Sociology is a popular field of study with a relatively small number of positions.” On the other hand, the advantages of a career in sociologist include good pay and a wide variety of fields in which an individual can work in. Additionally, a sociologist gets the satisfaction of helping his/her client overcome various challenges by mediating conflicts and advocating for social reform (Learning Path, 2017).

In conclusion, there are many careers that an individual with a degree in sociology can pursue. However, people seeking careers in sociology must be prepared for competition posed by individuals with degrees in other fields such as psychology and political science, among others.
