The speaker of this video introduces herself as one from a Chinese background, but she has of the American culture as she has been brought up in America, was born in America and has English as her first language. From the contest of what culture is defined to be, the speaker is from the American Culture.
The Speaker introduces a story to relay her message about the importance of culture and how it might affect people in their actions. She also tries to explain how one can be misunderstood due to their culture and personality. The speaker insists that it is not enough to judge people by their cultures alone or by their origins alone but by an additional concept of intertwining the two to give a better assessment of the reasons why one acts the way they do.

When I was watching and listening to the video, I had in mind what perspective people have on various citizens of America who are immigrants. It is a wide scope of misunderstanding that goes overboard relating people’s cultures and their ways of actions. Reflecting on the perspective of people from Africa, it is often thought that these people are primitive and less knowledgeable about the current evolution in communications, transport, and use of modern equipment. This illusion could be because of the image Africans have been portrayed to be. However, this is far from the truth when one takes a close interaction with people from Africa. It would be to one’s surprise that these people are very intelligent and have ideas that would greatly change the world. Nonetheless, people rarely consider their abilities and strengths or get to explain the reason why they seem to act primitively. It has been on record that their leaders are corrupt and often launder the money that is supposed to develop their countries. This could explain why people of American origin who have lived in the same environment still show levels of primitivism.
In the speaker’s perspective of culture, it is important to understand that culture does not play a sole role in developing ones being but rather the environment one develops in and their personality too. The speaker notes that it is hard for one to come to a dependable conclusion by just looking at the cultural origin of someone or by just looking at how somebody acts. She thinks that is people from different cultural backgrounds with similar personalities were raised in the same environment. There is a high level of probability that these people would act with close similarities.
The speaker’s perspective comes with an acute coincidence with the knowledge I learned in the course readings regarding challenges and rewards of a culturally informed. Checking on the speaker’s paradox of who Pat is, she tries to create a metaphor that explains the possible misjudgments that can be created by someone who understands a certain culture. Her concurrence with the impact of culture on one’s ways of action is clearly aligned with the readings of the course.
In my own perspective, the speaker does not give an extent to which culture affects one’s actions and versus the effects of their personality. In my perspective, I think culture shapes personality and gives a voice of reason to one's way of action. She should have researched on the aspects of the extents of effects of culture and personality. A final and more informing talk would include the different degrees of effects.
