Removing a sense

Of the five senses gifted to human beings, I would choose to lose the sense of hearing. I was always curious about what life would be without the sense of hearing. Hearing is a sense that I believe most people can get on in life without. I was forced to learn sign language at a young age as my neighbor’s son became deaf. He did not seem to miss much, as we always signed to him. I, however, cannot imagine life without the ability to see anything. For me, not being able to see would mean that I would not even know how I looked like, and that would be very depressing for me. I would always feel like I am buried alive with all the darkness around me. Moreover, I cannot live without touch as I believe touch allows you to perceive your environment better. Touch will allow you to feel comforted, realize when you are hurt or when it is cold. Taste and smell are senses I also believe I could not live without since taste ensures I do not eat poisonous food while smell ensures I am aware in case of a gas leak, smoke, or soured liquids.

Effect of removal

If I could not hear, I would face some significant challenges. First, I would have a hard time understanding people who try to speak to me as I could not hear them. I would also have to learn how sign to be able to communicate with people, and those around me would have to learn how to sign as well. Next, if I was to travel to a different country, I would have to learn how to sign in that country’s sign language since each state has a unique sign language. I would also have to learn how to read lips to ensure I get what people who cannot sign are saying. I would also not be able to know if something is creeping up on me. I would also have to install a different doorbell to my house, seeing that I cannot hear the door ringing, but I can see lights flickering.

Enhancing a sense

If I could choose a sense to be enhanced among the five senses I have, I would opt for enhanced sight. I have always been curious about enhanced sight as I wanted to be able to perceive things with better acuity and a better range of vision based on telescopic, x-ray-vision, and infrared vision. I would not opt for an enhanced touch since I am already good at detecting objects and specific people. I would also not opt for enhanced smell since I am not that interested in smelling things from a distance. I would also not be interested in improved taste as I am already able to taste sweetness and bitterness. For me, the enhanced sight would be the best option after losing my ability to hear.

Effect of enhancement

Having enhanced vision would be beneficial in numerous ways. First, I will be able to perceive everything better, making me a unique individual with a wide range of visual powers. Next, I would be able to have x-ray vision, which would allow me to see through solid objects after I master the ability. This would ensure that I know of any dangers lurking on the other side, making me more vigilant. I would also have a telescopic vision that will allow me to see objects from remote distances. I would also have an infrared vision that would allow me to see at night better than most human beings.
