In the recent years, the number of children avoiding social interaction has increased. Such children prefer being alone, they avoid playing, interacting or engaging in any teamwork activity with their peers. It is from these results of the increasing numbers that the scientists have seen the importance of conducting extensive research on the matter. Child psychology significantly affects their behavioral characteristics, and it is this concept that has been used to explain this social withdraw and its causes. 

Summary 

The journal article,” distinguishing between conflicted shyness and social disinterest in early childhood,” explains further about social withdrawal. The journal brings out two types of social withdraw among children at a very young age. Conflicted shyness- whereby children are afraid of interacting and playing with their peers. This kind of behavior is caused by both interior and exterior causes. Children being affected by conflicted shyness have an internal motivation that makes them avoid playing or interacting with other kids. The parenting skills adopted by children can also make them prefer their company instead of that of their peers. This includes loving and caring for the children too much, Wild, C.J. (1986).

Parents at times force children to do things their way and do not give them enough freedom to be their own which causes such children avoid their peers. Such children can also be avoided or disregarded by their peers who force them to be on their own. Social disinterest, the second withdraw, involves children performing better on themselves. Such children find it hard to adjust to teams, especially during school activities. They study, play and do all their things along. Children with active and independent mothers have been associated with this social withdraw, Scott, A.J. (1986). 

Research Methodology 

Various methods of research and analysis were used in the journal article, ‘distinguishing between conflicted shyness and social disinterest in early childhood’. These methods used include: 

Observation method- whereby children were observed in the playgrounds and their behaviors recorded by qualified assistants each assisted to different groups of children. 

Questionnaire method- questionnaires were also issued to mothers in the different samples where they were to answer different parenting styles. 

Interview practice- a qualified female assistant, also interviewed children in sample two. 

Filling in inventories- parents in both samples were also asked to fill in inventories such as Colorado Child Temperament Inventory and Revised Social Goals Inventory, which could gauge the children’s temperament and the importance that guardians place on their children’s sociability. 

The use of two mothers’ and children samples, however, is not quite enough for one to be able to draw a standard conclusion since the number of children around the globe is a bit large to be represented by just two samples. It’s good to note that children have different social withdraw effects like the environment. The two samples used in the journal, therefore, were not a representative of a larger population. “Random sampling of various samples in different geographical areas is critical when conducting behavioral characteristics of individuals,” (Edward 2014). 

Methods of gathering data and the conclusions 

The researchers collected their data in respect to their various methods used in conducting the research. Inventories were collected, the data between two samples recorded and compared. The interview sessions were also tapped and listened to later during the process of gathering data. Questionnaires were also collected analyzed and comparisons were made. From the course of collecting and analyzing the data, the researchers concluded that: 

The age of children could not be associated with social withdraw. Children of any age could, therefore, be affected by either social disinterest or conflicted shyness. 

Both paternal and maternal education could not be associated with social withdrawal affecting children. 

Conflicted shyness cannot be linked to the people who chose to play with either the teacher, alone or with their peers. 

Children who prefer to play alone or their teacher rather than with their peers are most to be affected with social disinterest. 

Analysis of the conclusions 

I agree with the researcher conclusion of age not being associated with children’s social withdraw. This is because children of all ages can be affected by either conflicted shyness or social disinterest, (Scott &Wild 1986). However, I disagree with the conclusion of parental education not being associated with social withdrawal. This is because parental education affects children’s academic achievements as well as their behavioral characteristics. Children who have been taught to work, perform and succeed on their own tend to show characteristics of social disinterest. Such children dislike teamwork and prefer their solitude and working in their aloneness, (Eccless 1993). 

Ethical concerns 

In the above study and conclusions made in the journal article, there has been no evidence of ethical concerns. The researcher assigned to interview the children were female researchers who were qualified. Those allocated to the fields for observations were also highly trained and qualified. The scientists gathering and analyzing the data are as well as deriving conclusions are trained, skilled and focused. This, therefore, removes any evidence or question of ethical issues in the case study. 

Conclusion 

Further research that should be conducted in the area of child psychology is the effect of the developing technology on children interactions. This is because, with the coming up of the internet, smartphones, and computers, many children prefer playing video games alone behind indoors instead of playing with their peers after school. The coming up of e-learning has also prevented many children from interacting with their peers hence making them learn in solitude, Fiske, M. (1938).
