The first chapter of this book is a reflection of the author’s perspective on the subject of the Christian’s walk of faith as a calling. It also introduces the aspect of vocation as an important aspect of a Christian’s life. The author believes that it is the duty of every Christian to use their God-given abilities and talents to serve humanity. The aspect that is family and its importance in fulfilling God’s plan for mankind. He gave both men and women the responsibility to be parents and have children. Through this act, He extends His grace and love for all. This call to parentage is part of this vocation. The author is however, quick to point out the weakness that humans have dating back as far as to our biblical first parents, Adam and Eve. He also points out that people are bound to sin especially when they are not sure on what their vocations are. This doctrine of vocation is therefore an encompassing factor in a Christian’s life. It is a guide to attaining the required status of righteousness that a Christian aims at reaching through believing and having faith.

Vocation is derived from the Latin language and loosely translates to a calling (Veith, 2011). It is therefore considered to be an act that involves total dedication to the work of God and also church work at large. Other occupations that humans choose to indulge in throughout their lives even though accepted and acknowledged as a necessity, they were still considered worldly. The reformers of the early era of the church such as Luther and Calvin developed programs that were essentially used to include working in other occupations alongside church duties. This doctrine of vocation involves also encouraging the individual abilities of Christians and their talents in different duties. It is therefore important to understand that every personality has his unique God-given talents that are viewed as gifts and they should be fully utilized to the glory of God. The book therefore analyzes vocation as a key and essential factor to the life of a Christian. It tackles in depth the different types of vocations that exist and the different challenges that face each of them. The reformers believed that every single Christian had several callings and that sometimes they do not fulfill their vocations as required.

The gospel according to Saint Mark in its twelfth chapter as from chapter twenty-eight discusses Jesus’ teaching on the greatest commandment of all. When Christ was asked about it by one of the scribes, He answered him by teaching on Christians loving God whole-heartedly. It also goes further to discuss the relationship that Christians should have with their neighbours. Jesus teaches that Christians should love their neighbours as they love themselves. In the gospel of Matthew, in chapter six, Christians are advised not to treasure earthly resources as they will eventually get destroyed. Cultivating a good relationship with our maker as an investment for better life in heaven. Treasures stored in heaven according to the Bible are not at risk of being stolen or destroyed by moths or dust.

In their book How Now Shall We Live, Charles Colson and Nancy Pearcey tackle the problems that modern age Christians undergo in comparison to the early age Christians. Christians are encouraged to proclaim more boldly than ever before the work of Christ. In a world that is changing in all spheres, embracing other cultures while at the same time spreading the message of Christianity is a challenge that all believers should undertake as a calling.
