Question 1

Chronic illnesses like cancer, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease are the main causes of death and disability in the united states. Most people with these illnesses suffer from depression. Even though chronic illnesses are common, they can be prevented. Most of them are lifestyle diseases and people can choose healthy lifestyles to prevent them. Being physically active, eating healthy and nutritious foods, and avoiding smoking can help a great deal in preventing most chronic diseases and conditions. Adopting a healthy lifestyle which includes engaging in physical activity and eating more nutritious foods can also help in managing heart diseases, diabetes, and arthritis among other chronic conditions. According to Straub (2016), Chronic illnesses make people feel cut off from others and this makes coping stressful. With the advancement of technology, new treatment methods have been discovered. People are more equipped with knowledge on the prevention of illnesses. However, technology gets people engaged making it difficult for them to offer social support to their loved ones suffering from chronic illnesses.

Question 2

The chronic illness I selected is HIV/AIDs. Understanding the biological and behavioral factors that influence HIV/AIDs help a great deal in enhancing prevention and treatment. Biological factors include circumcision and circulation of the virus in genital secretions and blood. Behavioral factors associated with the transmission of HIV/AIDs include having multiple sex partners, having unprotected sex, and initiating sexual activity earlier for adolescents ( Chhim et al., 2017). Chronic diseases are associated with stigma because they can cause abnormalities and visible disabilities. People suffering from HIV/AIDs suffer stigma even when they are not showing symptoms. This gives them anxiety as they interact with new people. Healthcare professionals help patients cope with stigma by equipping them with the knowledge to interact with others and how to manage the condition.
