The students need to develop independent learning skills for them to become successful in their work. Independent learning skills occur when a student can act, think critically, and take their studies independently. By applying the independent learning skills, the student can research on further classroom work instead of r+elying upon the teacher for all the background information. The skills range from cognitive skills, metacognitive skills to affective skills. Cognitive skills boost the student ability to solve problems informally, metacognitive skills involve formal strategies to look, write, and apply previously learnt knowledge, and affective skills involves the student’s motivation to promote their independence in learning (Wibrowski, Matthews, & Kitsantas, 2017) . Teachers should impact skills to ensure students apply independent learning skills promptly. 

The students should be given opportunities for self-monitoring and encourage individual work assessment. Self-monitoring seeks to identify a goal and receive feedback from oneself and others. The teachers should promote the students to self-monitoring by encouraging them to develop the application of self-assessment and peer assessment. Another skill is time management where students should be encouraged to set their own studying goals within a specific timeline (Wibrowski, Matthews, & Kitsantas, 2017) . Through time management the students can have ownership of their learning and set their own time to complete assignments.

Additionally, collaboration should be established among students in their group assignments to ensure that students learn from each other. Collaboration helps the students to generate their ideas rather than always looking for instructors to provide a solution. Also, teacher scaffolding is necessary to transfer a teacher’s responsibility to the students and at the same time promoting student’s responses flexibility. Also, communication is an important factor to promote the sharing of students thinking. Additionally, homework feedback will promote student’s confidence in their independent work, therefore, helping them reflect on their work (Beaumont, Moscrop & Canning, 2016) . Finally, the benefits of independent learning are seen in better academic performance, student confidence, improved motivation, student’s awareness of their limitation, and teachers focus in providing unique tasks to each student to boost student limitations in various fields.

From the above table, the mean score of students at independent learning level is C while the mean score of students at instruction level is D. This result portray that independent learning skills promote improved reading level hence better performance compared to instructional level.
