The dilemma between coding boot camps and a four-year degree is something that many young individuals go through. Currently, competition in the job market is increasing, and many of the young people in the entry level are getting desperate to get jobs. Information technology is a field that is growing at a very fast rate, and therefore young individuals are interested in the area of study despite the fact that they may have done degrees in other areas of study. Some companies embrace those that have done degrees in information technology or computer science while there are those that do not mind the education as long as one has the knowledge on how to perform coding. Hence the dilemma comes in on whether one should choose the coding boot camps or the four-year university degree.

According to an article titled ‘The rise of coding boot camps’ by Robert Dufner, there are various aspects about the boot camps that the author points out. It is well explained on how many graduates find it hard to excel in individual companies and mainly because they lack the expertise of coding. Through proper information on how to precisely perform certain aspects of the coding process, it is, possible for them to apply at the place of work. There are companies that can let one learn some of the things through apprenticeship, but most do not have the time to waste on such things and therefore require someone who possess that knowledge. In most cases these, entry level employees are graduates in different fields and not in technology but they need the experience in order to excel in a particular company. Through that fact, boot camps came up to provide a platform where one can learn the exact processes they require to perform a particular task in coding and therefore in twelve weeks’ time they are experts in coding. The teaching is typically done by senior professionals in that field.

The second article is titled ‘Want a job in Silicon valley? Keep away from coding schools’ by Bloomberg technology. The article is basically talking about the disadvantages of going through the coding schools and how much they are in efficient in the information taught. According to Bloomberg, an example of Contreras is given on how he goes to an interview and is unable to carry out a simple task of coding a certain java script. It shows how Coding house which is a Silicon Valley school that is known to have duped so many students. The school was given a directive to shut down sometime back but has never and yet the quality of education they teach is below the required standards therefore duping many students off their tuition fee. Their mode of teaching these students was not appropriate for everyone and therefore there are many that were not gaining what they had paid for. They are generally not the best place to acquire the coding skills required on a professional level according to Bloomberg.

The first article clearly states its stand on coding boot camps as being positive if one wants to improve their skills in the job market. It states that those who go through it are mainly graduates who intend to expand their skills further apart from the skills they acquired in their four year degree course. There are also instances where young people just want to understand the skill of coding and enter the job market as information technology professionals rather than the four year degree program. The second one does not encourage the coding boot camps and gives examples of those who have been disappointed by the programs. According to Bloomberg, the coding boot camps do not give quality education and reap off people their money. The two articles contrast their position of coding boot camps and both give their reasons which are valid and therefore one needs to be careful when they are making a decision about it.

In conclusion, it is advisable for students who just cleared their high school level to do a degree in computer science or information technology unlike going for a certificate in a boot camp. The main reason is that coding boot camps are not all efficient in the way they teach their students and therefore one may spend a lot on tuition fee only to realize that they cannot perform some of the things required at their places of work. It is best that one goes for a four-year degree where the instructors give their students undivided attention and give them time to internalize what is taught.
