Analysis: NYPD Radicalization Report-Executive Summary
What was the research question being addressed?
The research question in this report is whether home-grown terrorism poses a significant threat to the safety of the American population. After the 9/11 attacks, the security details observe that terrorism activities have evolved. Terrorists do not have to move from one region to another to carry out their activities. Instead, they can use their ideology to influence people in places they live to subscribe to their ideas. Of particular interest to New York Police Department (NYPD) is the Muslim population that lives in the US. Security experts want to examine the level of responsiveness of Muslims in the US in comparison with the others in the world.
What literature was reviewed in support of this research?
The NYPD seeks to understand the topic better by analyzing works of two experts who have written about the subject. The first article written by Michael Jenkins investigates the radicalization process. Jenkins is mainly interested in how innocent individuals become convinced until they publicly declare that they are members of the terrorist groups. The second article, written by Alain Bauer tries to look at the worldwide criminal trends to understand what is going on and to detect the terrorist activities. The report seemingly is meant to make the security apparatus aware that terrorism has evolved and therefore there is need to be at par with the global trends

The research question of the report
The research question that was being addressed in this report was, “Does the current economic and political climate fuel resurgence in radicalization and recruitment if rightwing extremists?”
The Literature review in the report
Several types of research work have been employed in various sections of the report, such the 2007 study from the German Institute for Economic Research. Most of literature has been paraphrased in the report. There are high incidences where the report reflects on the past events and then tries to compare them with the current ones. For instance, the report states, “ The current economic and political climate has some similarities to the 1990s when rightwing extremism experienced a resurgence fueled largely by an economic recession, criticism about the outsourcing of jobs, and the perceived threat to the United States power sovereignty by other foreign powers”. The comparison of events helps the reader to evaluate the possible chances of the recurrence of similar events.
Type of Research Method
The Department of Homeland Security employed the qualitative method in the exploratory research to produce their report. Compare and Contrast
What report used the best research methodology to gather its data?
The DHS article employed the most favorable research methodology. The threats posed by several groups that are against the government and a deterioration of the economic growth form basis for the upsurge of extremists focus from the DHS article is mainly internal and centers on extremist that affect a central government. The sampling of the extremist as per the stipulates aspect isolates the extremist base on their stand.
What were the weaknesses of these two reports in their research methods?
The two reports fail to identify the main radicalization mission, the overall concept of radicalization and extremisms may not only be about politics and economic deterioration, but sometimes-personal belief and previous injustices committed by a state.
What do other research methods you believe might improve either reports effectiveness?
The reports effectiveness may identify the route course of the extremists and jihadists upsurge rather than be offering a general perspective
Do you agree with the analysis of these two reports?
I partly agree with the two reports analysis. The fact that right-wing extremists and jihadist bare a threat to the immediate surrounding is an ideal reason for their elimination. What motivates the participation of citizens it this event is the ideological aspect that is raised by the perpetrators of terrorism. As much as the rightwing extremist, emerge with a gubernatorial element of the economy, their strategy continues to draw masses that eventually are radicalized.
