Sergeant major plays a defining role in their units or squads. In my opinion, the sergeant major is an influential member of the squad. Besides building discipline, a sergeant mayor ensures that teams are highly trained, cohesive, fit, and ready for a mission (Department of the Army, 2019). A unit, for instance, needs to share a sense of mission and purpose. It also needs to learn to persevere during challenges and adversity. A sergeant major, therefore, oversees the continued development of a unit. This continued progression depends on the culture set by squad leaders. A sergeant major must ensure all members perform to their optimum level. Hence, as army leaders, they need to point out the risks and stressors that can lower individual performance. One of the benefits of culture is preparing individual soldiers, both mentally and physically prepare for missions. Moreover, to achieve continuous development, a sergeant major must listen, show compassion, and lead individual soldiers to be a positive track.
The four decision-making styles: integrative, flexible, hierarchic, and decisive, are vital in the army leadership (Sergeants Major Course, 2006). Decisiveness allows army leaders to take speedy, efficient, and consistent actions. For instance, units prepare plans that army leaders have to follow by implementing. Flexibility tends to value speed, but there is an element of adaptability. Flexibility, for instance, enables army leaders to decide the line of the attack quickly. Army leaders do not need to rush to decisions or judgments. Therefore, the hierarchic component allows army leaders to gather enough information, allow others to contribute before making a decision (Sergeants Major Course, 2006). Hence, hierarchic allows leaders to make long-term decisions. Army leaders need support and contribution to make sound decisions. For instance, they need an integrative approach to look at situations broadly, noting several overlapping elements. Therefore, army leaders need to employ these approaches to strengthen the experiences, skills, and talents of junior commanders, as noted.
