Specific roles in different careers require pertinent competencies that indicate the skills or behaviors that professionals must have to perform ideally. Professionals in the organizational development (OD) realm are guided by a host of competencies clustered in five key areas: individual, interpersonal, operational, leadership, and organizational.

In the individual category, an OD practitioner must have decision-making skills. In an organization set up, an OD expert gets involved in different decision making instances that they must give their input (“Guide to Workplace Competencies,” 2020). For an organization to develop, an OD must guide the executive by providing information for holistic improvement. Decision-making competency is essential to the practitioner because it will help them improve their professional profile. A client will gain from this skill by reaping informed decisions that will help their organizations improve in all sectors.

An OD expert must have interpersonal excellence competencies. In this class, teamwork and collaboration are inherent characteristics that one must have as an OD expert. For an individual to excel as an OD professional, they must know how to work with others positively (“Guide to Workplace Competencies,” 2020). When people work as a team, the client gets exhaustive solutions while the OD gains skills and knowledge they did not initially have.

The third type of competency is operational excellence, which shifts to the organizational level of needed skills. Information and technology is a vital skill that gives an OD professional with a platform to leverage their knowledge with the current advancements in technology (“Guide to Workplace Competencies,” 2020). One must have a technical skill that they can combine with their general knowledge to give clients extensive service. Information technology provides the OD professional with an opportunity to utilize the different IT systems in their organizations. Integrating IT skills will benefit clients because such skills enrichen the decision-making abilities of OD experts.

In the leadership group, the OD expert must understand how to establish effective teams. Effective teams are directly associated with teamwork, and thus an OD must understand the dynamics of establishing a cohesive team (“Guide to Workplace Competencies,” 2020). Teamwork will supplement an individual’s skills because different people are abled differently. An OD will have their decision fortified by the different inputs from the team members.

Organizational excellence competency skills come last among the competencies that an OD expert must-have. In this category, one must have customer focus expertise (“Guide to Workplace Competencies,” 2020). In any undertaking, the customer is the focus, which means that an OD professional must understand a client's predicament. Understanding the client's issue will enable the expert to strategize beforehand, thus saving on time and resources. The clients will have their problem solved capably in and in a short time.

Just like in any other profession, ethics are critical for an OD professional. For one to be ethical, they must topnotch decision making and problem-solving. Ethics revolve around decision making and the ability to arrive at moral solutions to problems “( International Association for Group Psychotherapy and Group Processes”; Wooten, 2008 ).
