Complementary and alternative medicine are jointly referred to as CAM which represents medical practices and products that are not considered as standard medical care. Complimentary medicine, to begin with, is a treatment that is applied alongside standard medical treatment but is never considered to be standard treatment. According to Aghaie (2018), examples of such treatments include massage therapy and acupuncture. On the other hand, alternative medicine is a treatment that is applied instead of standard medical treatment. For example, the use of special diets for cancer patients. While both complementary and alternative medicine are not part of the standard medical treatment, complementary medicine works in addition to standard medical treatment, and alternative medicine completely replaces the standard medical treatment (Aghaie, 2018).
The autonomic nervous system helps the body in the regulation of the vital processes like blood pressure and breathing rate. It is important to note that the system works autonomically without the individual’s effort or conscious. Essentially, it is the autonomic nervous system that supplies internal body organs such as blood vessels, intestines, kidneys, liver, lungs, genitals, heart, excretory glands and pupils among other parts.

The autonomic nervous system responds according to the message sent to the brain. In some instances, especially in workplaces characterized by stress and pressure, the autonomic nervous system will lead to stress-related diseases (Harris and Eddey, 2015). The relationship between CAM and the autonomic nervous system is that CAM act to normalize the response of the autonomic nervous system (Autonomic nervous system responses for normal and slow rewarmers after hand cold provocation: effects of long-term cold climate training, 2013). Workplace stress-related complications and insomnia have been controlled by aromatherapy (Aghaie, 2018). Essential oils of lavender, bergamot, and geranium have been used to relieve the body of its tension and to regulate sleep and mood. Further, complementary approaches like counseling and group consciousness have been used after World War II in stabilizing mood and attitude of patients. Cancer patients put under intervention of counselors healed faster compared to those who were not.
