Metal illness appears shocking to Christians because an individual cannot have mental illness and still be considered faithful. This stems from the belief that mental illness can be cured by prayer alone (Amy, 2013). If the condition does not leave the person, then that individual has little or no faith. Accordingly, many Christians do not also believe in curing the problem by looking at other parameters such as seeking modern medicine. For this reason, many mentally disturbed faithful people are left alone at home dealing with their problems as the church in its capacity does not want to engage in the problems. This increases the existential problem as to why there are many suicides linked to mental illness as a consequence of stigmatization by the church.

Mental illness is commonly based on the fact that there is no spiritual intervention by the church and ministers. There is also on-going stigmatization in the community as the church believes that mental illness is caused by unrepentant sin. In essence, spirituality, religions, and prayer play an important role in wellness. For many people, the rituals involved in organized religion, of adhering to a belief system, and as well as the community support have been known to develop a healthy mental state (Amy, 2013).

Perceptively, mental illness should be given all-encompassing attention as cancer. In the contemporary society, cancer has been given serious attention, including science and research, funding, and community sensitization. Conversely, this element does not apply to mental conditions despite the fact that mental illness in the United States is equal to the percentage of people diagnosed with cancer. That being said, the society should also make a pro-active effort towards handling mental illness problems in the society.
