Consumerism was a lifestyle revolutionary period marked by increased manufacturing activities. Particularly, consumerism was mainly defined by two aspects. First, there was a surge in the manufacture of consumer goods like fashion items, clothes, and household commodities. Secondly, the citizenry adopted a culture of keeping up with the trends in the manufacturing industry. This period was thus characterized by people acquiring the finest, trending, and high quality manufactured products. Consumerism grew due to the integration of several socio-political and economic factors. After the First World War, the US emerged as the victor thus increasing the pride of US citizens who at that time were riding on the grace of being one of the most industrialized countries in the world. Subsequently, individuals embraced their citizenship and enjoyed the lifestyle that was definitive of their country’s socio-economic status. Resultantly, the standards of living rose as more people adopted modernism.
Keeping up with trends and leading a top-notch lifestyle became a nation-wide phenomenon. While many thought they were enjoying their liberty and freedom to live the ‘American dream’ at that time, they were, in fact, being ‘slaves.’ This is exemplified by the huge debts accrued during this period. Items like the vacuum cleaner made life easier hence people shifted from the household activities and sought high-end careers in industries. Consequently, the citizenry paid less attention to important aspects of their freedoms like speech, the media, and equality. Indeed, organizations such as the Civil Rights Movements together with their activists received less attention. As the consumerism fever ravaged through the American culture, the subsistence industries diminished slowly. In the end, the real meaning of American Freedom lost meaning as many people were left with huge debts and the subsistence sectors like agriculture started fading. Ultimately, the effects of consumerism set the stage for the Great Depression.
