As the consumerism fever ravaged through the American culture, the subsistence industries diminished slowly. In the end, the real meaning of American Freedom lost meaning as many people were left with huge debts and the subsistence sectors like agriculture started fading. Ultimately, the effects of consumerism set the stage for the Great Depression.
