Narrowing down to attachment in regard to the control theory, it seems to be the most crucial component. The case of Lucas is clear evidence of this assertion. Lucas seems not to have been close to his parents from a young age, a factor that affects him in different aspects. For example, it affects his social life in that he does not interact much with people. It also makes Lucas detached from his relations and does not find it necessary to pay them a visit.

Lucas’s parents did not communicate with him on child-rearing issues. Lucas was not punished for any wrong he did or encouraged to face life with a positive outlook. Therefore, Lucas must have grown up sulky and sullen. It is also likely that the cold relationship between him and his parents affected his performance at school. If Lucas had a good attachment with his parents, all the other aspects would have changed. His life would have been better in different ways.

Being attached to his family would make Lucas value relationships and respect the expectations of those he is attached to. It would also give him confidence. In this scenario, Lucas dropped out of school in 9 th grade because he did not have confidence in himself. If he was attached to his family, they would give him emotional support to see him through school. Attachment to family and friends would make Lucas think of the shame he would subject them to for dropping out of school and he would care about how his decision would hurt his attached people before executing it. This would make Lucas continue with education and come out successful. Lucas could have a better social life. He would want to connect with his friends and relatives and keep a good relationship with them. The attachment would make Lucas a responsible person making him focused to continue with his education and later get a stable Job.
