Egypt is a country in Northern Africa bordering the Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and part of the Asian Peninsula. According to the US Department of State, Cairo, Egypt’s capital city, is a medium-threat zone for crimes against the US government (Overseas Security Advisory Council [OSAC], 2020). The residents, mostly young men, attack foreigners by snatching their purses and pickpocketing. Semi-professional thieves rob foreigners in restaurants, stealing purses and phones, and in extreme cases, steal valuable items from their vehicles (OSAC, 2020). Some robbers use motorbikes to snatch items from and injure pedestrians.

Terrorism is a critical problem in Cairo. The US Department of State released a report claiming terrorist groups plan attacks without warning destroying diplomatic facilities, shopping malls, transportation systems, and tourist locations (OSAC, 2020). Despite the heavy security presence in the capital city, terrorist groups attack mosques, monasteries, and churches. The terrorist groups include the Army of Islam, Mujahidin Shura Council, al-Qaida, and ash-Sham – Sinai Province (Central Intelligence Agency [CIA], 2021). Although terrorist attacks can occur in any part of the country, the groups mostly target government facilities.

Egypt is also prone to transnational crime. According to the CIA (2021), Egypt enables the transit of men, women, and children subjected to sex trafficking and slavery. Most street children are sold to provide forced labor, and others engage in child sex tourism. Interpol identified criminal and terrorist networks that encourage the movement of persons, dirty money, and illicit goods (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime [UNODC], n.d.). Although the Egyptian government is working to improve border security, men are being sold into forced labor and women and girls being auctioned and exploited for prostitution. Apart from trafficking persons, Egypt is also a transit point for opium, heroin, and cannabis moving into Israel, North Africa, and Europe (CIA, 2021). This trade makes Egypt prone to money laundering activities.
