Critical infrastructure information refers to information regarding a government’s or countries critical infrastructure. Homeland Security (2019) define Critical infrastructure on the other hand as both digital and physical systems and assets that are vital to the United states to the extent that their destruction or incapacitation would significantly and debilitating impact both physical and economic security as well as public health and safety. Among the issues involved and enforced for effective and safe sharing of critical infrastructure information includes: integration of information sharing across the federal government, states and local governments as well as across private industries and citizens, improvement of public safety emergency communication as well as the adoption of a common ‘meta-data’ standards for electronic information. Guaranteeing reliable public information is emphasized by Gallahger and Neugebauer (2011) as another significant issue.
Non-sharing or partial sharing of critical infrastructure information significantly impact government decision making with regards to the various securities and public health needs. It could also lead to misinterpretation of various aspects or parameters of the stated information which consequently impacts a wide range of negative consequences. These consequences may include, but not limited to poor health care provision services as well as domestic or foreign terrorism impacting the countries physical and health security (Gallagher and Neugebauer, 2011). Among the major efforts in place to improve critical information sharing include integration of information sharing systems across the various government bodies and administrations, governed and monitored closely by security agencies such as Homeland. Other efforts taken up also include inherent prevention of cyber attacks against critical infrastructure, minimizing the vulnerability to the cyber attacks and minimizing damage and recovery time from any such cyber attacks.
