From the three disorders, the research participants endorsed the belief that alcoholism is caused by bad character. I think the disorder is fueled by bad behavior as buying and consumption of alcohol is a choice, whereby excessive and irresponsible consumption of this commodity leads to addiction. The participants endorsed the belief that persons with major depression and alcohol dependence would be violent to others. Using the sampling method, the researchers measured stigma towards the three disorders in two sets for social distance and dangerousness perception. The researchers conducted a survey to determine how many people were willing to work with, marry, live next to, socialize with, befriend, or marry individuals with these disorders.

To determine if the participants had a neurobiological conception of mental disorder by conducting a survey on the randomly selected vignette and drawing conclusions from their responses. They inquired whether; the participant had a mental illness or going through ups and downs in life. If the patient attributed the illness to genetics/inheritance, a chemical imbalance in the brain, their bad character, or the way they were raised.

The researchers discovered that mental illness cases with neurobiological conception are either unrelated to public stigma or increased the odds of public stigma towards the victim, especially for the schizophrenia patients, who attract more stigmatization at work. The researchers recorded no significant decrease in public stigma for the mental illness patient was recorded in both the 1996 and the 2006 surveys. In fact, in some mental illness cases, an increase in public stigma was recorded.

The researchers established in both surveys that mental illnesses caused by neurobiological conception attract the possibility of treatment endorsement, increasing over the years. Despite the maintenance of the stigma level, the researchers recorded a significant change in 2006 for the acceptance of neurological theories medical treatment such as psychiatry. I think this change can be attributed to the 'decade of the brain', which has created awareness and helped normalize mental illness. This reduces stigma and prompts people to open up to medical treatment.
