I graduated from California State University, Long Beach, with a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management. The skills that I learned in class have equipped me with essential tools that will help me to offer crucial services within the hospitality and tourism industry. However, aside from the great lessons that I learned from class, there is one key lesson that I learned out of the classroom, which I believe will be vital in my future career within the hospitality industry. I learned that it is important to maintain high levels of cultural awareness within my profession. I believe that this is important because the profession encompasses interacting and serving people from different walks of lives. In order to advance and grow in my profession within the hospitality industry, I will encounter many people from different countries. These people will often have different cultures and ways of life. Because the industry is centered on service to people, I will have to understand and remain sensitive to different cultures, nationalities, races, and religions. I learned to embrace cultural awareness because I believe it is instrumental in the success of hospitality. I was able to attain and maintain high levels of cultural awareness by adopting an open mind and embracing the people around me. I was also able to shun common stereotypes and assumptions about certain groups of people. I believe that remaining culturally aware will be integral in helping me make customers more comfortable and at ease when around me. I think that this is central because I will be able to attain high levels of consumer satisfaction, and this may be valuable in establishing loyalty among consumers. It may also be a great marketing tool, especially when customers refer you to other associates.
