Attorney General Holder essentially called the United States a nation of cowards following the continuous reaction to the issues of race to the country. Due to historical applications, the issue of historical atrocities against the black American race has caused significant issues in today’s interactions. Americans have a lot to be concerned and outraged about with regards to this statement. While the United States people are not completely over forms of racism, this is one of the leading countries in ensuring that people of color have equal opportunity. This could be seen with the hallmark of electing the first black American president.
In consideration of the allegations made by the Attorney General in his speech, research from the New York Times confirms that re-segregation has indeed been happening. New York City’s public schools experience some of the highest segregation rates after Chicago and Dallas. For example, more than half of all New York City’s schools are ninety percent populated by Hispanics and black Americans. Despite residential segregation declining, segregation within schools has been rising. This is shocking as I have come to believe that segregation is a thing of the past in the country. Indeed, this data is eye-opening on the persistence of the race issue in today’s American society.

The argument between political analysts was largely based on an offensive and defensive stand between the races. This would only seem to attack the person who raised the issue, rather than tackle the issue in itself. The argument seemed to me that though there were personal and political issues of consideration, the main issue of widespread segregation happening was not tackled. Interestingly, this was the gist of Attorney General Holder’s speech.

This is because understanding the cultural background of the person informs a successful intervention process. Some important steps including bringing out the race issue clearly to the discussion and determining the attitudes that the patient has towards cross-cultural medical interventions. Moreover, the care provider needs to understand the diversity among African Americans and proceed from this point of understanding, noting individual characteristics of the patient.
With this done, it is possible to determine the positive assets of the client, and use them to form and egalitarian relationship. Here a personal connection can be created, and a culturally sensitive approach to care can be developed for therapeutic purposes. External factors that could have some bearing on the problem can be identified. Issues surrounding racial identity can equally be explored.
