A data warehouse is defined as a location for data storage that is used to archive, protect and examine organization’s data. An organization’s data warehouse is made up of several integrated databases. A data warehouse stores easily accessible data that is used in the organization's daily operations. A data warehouse is divided into different types depending on the form of data it stores. An offline data warehouse is used for the storage of offline data. In this warehouse, data is easily accessed and is updated from time to time. A real-time data warehouse is a type of warehouse whereby data is updated when new data is recorded. An integrated data warehouse is intertwined with other systems.

A Data Mart is a small form of a data warehouse that stores data for a specific section of an organization. The difference between a data mart and a data warehouse is that a data mart is more simple and is easily established and maintained. A data warehouse centralizes on a variety of subject matters and obtains data from different sources while data mart centralizes only one subject matter and obtains data from few areas ( Jarke, Lenzerini, Vassiliou, & Vassiliadis, 2013).  Data marts are divided into the independent and dependent data mart. Independent data mart obtains information from outside the organizational data warehouse while depended data mart obtains information from the organization's main data warehouse.

Organizations use data warehouse for management of business intelligence data. The main functions of a data warehouse are to acquire and examine data from both inside and outside sources. According to Ranjan (2009), data warehouses have business intelligence mechanisms used for extraction of data. There are various issues that may arise during data mining and reporting. These include missing values, a lot of data, unintegrated data, inconsistent data and wrong granularity of data. Organizations use data mart to collect data in a specific section of the organization. Organizations use data marts and data warehouses as a way to aid assemblage of daily reports on organization's progress through constant collection and analysis of central data.
