I enjoyed the entire course, but the highlights for me included the lesson on workplace communication. It might seem obvious that people must communicate within the workplace, but I believe that it is not as simple to communicate effectively. When working within an organization, it is vital that an individual understand that there are specific communication ethics that must be maintained as well as strategies that should be used to pass information to facilitate the effectiveness of the communication process in a culturally diverse environment. Learning about the simple but often overlooked aspects of workplace communication enlightened me on the necessity for feedback in the communication process, an element that I often disregarded in the past. I am confident that moving forward, I will be a better communicator within the workplace now that the course equipped me with the crucial communication skills I require to pass and receive messages effectively. Similarly, exploring the issue on the abolition of tests for the SNCOs positions in the US military was interesting because I became aware of the fact that academic excellence is not all that is required to become a leader. Leadership requires an individual to be more than ‘book smart.’ Therefore, during the selection of leaders, both the military and other industrial sectors should factor in an individual’s characteristics and abilities to lead rather than their academic merits to qualify them for leadership positions. However, I believe that academic excellence, coupled with leadership skills is necessary for effective leadership. The fact that academic excellence is not a qualifier for leadership does not mean that it should be completely overlooked when selecting leaders. Being the head of a team requires that one have sufficient knowledge about matters of concern to create a base for critical thinking, primarily in cases that the leader needs to make decisions. Critical thinking is a major factor in the making of a good a leader. It helps in the making of logical decisions since it involves the use of information gained to guide the process of decision making. The inclusion of diversity training in my armoury of tools also proved to be pivotal in training to undertake real life cases. The professor made it clear that being aware of diversity and developing a sensitivity to issues of diversity was important in the formulation of the strategies that would be an enabling factor in providing service to a large number of people. In fact, coupled with diversity in communication, awareness of diversity will go a long way in ensuring that the legal practice is successful. I therefore learnt that understanding the background of the deiverse groups of people will enable me to understand how to tackle their issues better. I had an “aha” moment when exploring community schools. Initially, I had never thought of them as a vital part of the communities within which they exist, but now I consider them essential components of the society that facilitate the realization of academic pursuits and the bonding of communities. I think that it is necessary that members of the public be educated on the role that community schools are supposed to play within society to maximize the realization of their functional roles. Most importantly, the values that community schools seek to pass including community, compassion, craftsmanship, courage, and curiosity, should be emphasized to facilitate the collaboration of regional members with the schools to help shape the students to become better society players. Moreover, learning about special education laws was enlightening. Previously, I did not know that the US government has implemented such strict requirements that seek to provide individuals with disability equal opportunities as the rest of us. If the statutes thereof are obeyed, American society will enjoy the perks of inclusion and diversity as well as reduce the dependency rates among the disabled, who are better placed to cater to their needs having acquired professional skills essential for securing employment opportunities. The knowledge on workplace communication will be essential to facilitating my communication as an employee, a factor that I believe will be vital to the realization of my career goals. Effective communication skills will enable me to pass and receive messages efficiently, leading to the betterment of my ability to manage information on a personal and professional level. Additionally, the knowledge on the subordinate nature that academic excellence plays in leadership will enable me to focus on the development of other leadership traits including critical thinking, decision making, and assertiveness, to facilitate the fulfillment of my career goal to hold a managerial position in the education industry. An underlining factor in the applicaton of all the skills that were learnt is the ability to communicate effectively especially with the presentation of facts through written communication. The guidance of the professor underlined the fact that concise presentation of the facts is the cornerstone of communication through written means. As a result, I intend to ensure that I will always present information in a way that suits the audience best. I must admit that I enjoyed and benefitted from the professor’s input throughout the course. He provided effective strategies and feedback, as well as valuable information that added enriched the learning process. I believe that the professor facilitated the fulfillment of my academic needs, and I would appreciate getting another opportunity to learn under his guidance.
