Mr. Rodney, a teacher at in Albany shared some light on integrated curriculum and some of the efforts he has made towards integrating curriculum in his school. The teacher began by bringing to light the fact that today, teachers are quite limited on what they are supposed to offer students. For instance, a teacher is required to offer only what the curriculum covers regarding the content objectives. This is because teachers test students as per what is included in the content objective. According to Mr. Rodney, integrated curriculum makes learning much easier as students get to relate learning with real-life situations. Students can think outside the box, expand their knowledge and connect various disciplines. Mr. Rodney has made efforts to promote integrated learning by making students indulge in various activities such as clog dancing while learning. The teacher occasionally brings up various cultural and real-life stories while in class to shed more light on various topics. This way, students get to cover content objectives while also getting to expand their knowledge.
Mrs. Hellen, another teacher from the New York, also maintained that students learn better when teachers employ the strategies of integrated learning. According to Mrs. Hellen, an integrated curriculum goes beyond the teaching of more than one subject in a single class session. It is about connections. Students can connect various disciplines and use this to their advantage. They are also able to connect what they learn at school to real-life activities and situations. Mrs. Hellen has made improvements to integrate curriculum by making students aware of the real-life issue besides what is offered in the content objectives, engaging students in making small machines to nurture their skills and combining various subjects while teaching. Mrs. Hellen says, getting students to create various forms of machines helps them become innovative and also makes them believe in themselves. She also mentioned that teachers must also make sure that they stay aligned to the states academic standards and fully cover content objectives.
