My recent survey was about the nature of the curriculum used at my school. I sort information from two teachers teaching in the same grade level. According to both teachers, the curriculum needed some improvement or changes. One of the teachers also shared his concern on the impact of the curriculum on the future of most of the students. He said that students needed to learn other things that are not covered by the curriculum. The school curriculum aligns with the State education standards which means teachers must only cover the content within the curriculum. The teachers noted that the curriculum limited teachers from providing students with more knowledge that is necessary for real-life situations. Another shortcoming in the school curriculum is the failure to emphasize integrated learning. The teachers made it clear that students benefit a lot from an integrated learning approach as compared to the conventional learning approach. While the curriculum is result oriented, it fails to address the aspect of life outside of school.
The responses from the teachers show that the school needs to make changes to its curriculum for the benefit of the students. Students are prepared not only to pass exams but also to be able to incorporate what they have learned in the future and their real lives. The school curriculum emphasizes outlines the content objectives for every grade level and covers what students need to learn to pass from one grade level to another. The curriculum should include an integrated form of learning as a way to help students expand their knowledge and understanding of the society. It is because the curriculum will prepare and make students ready to face and cope with different situations in the society.
