Although proteins have numerous beneficial functions such as muscle retention, they also have adverse effects in the body. These negative health effects include weight gain, bad breath, constipation, diarrhea, and dehydration ( Whitney and Rolfes, 2018) . Other studies have also linked kidney damage, heart diseases and cancerous infections with excessive consumption of proteins ( Whitney and Rolfes, 2018) . For instance, red meat is one of the significant causes of cancer. Proteins may also cause osteoporosis which damages the bone as a result of calcium loss. Therefore, it is important for individuals to avoid the excessive consumption of proteins. The health benefits of proteins can only be realized if the nutrients are taken in a regulated proportion.

Excess proteins in the body are typically reserved as cholesterol ( Whitney and Rolfes, 2018) . Therefore, people are likely to gain excessive weight as a result of taking large quantities of proteins. If the consumption of protein is extended for a long period, then the affected individual may become obese. There are numerous infections which develop as a result of obesity ( Whitney and Rolfes, 2018) . These infections include high blood pressure, cardiac arrest, and cancer. Obesity usually occurs when proteins replace carbohydrates in the body.

Excessive proteins lead to the ketosis metabolic state that results in the production of unpleasant smell. Therefore, bad breath may be caused by excessive proteins. The likelihood of having the lousy breadth increases as an individual restricts their carbohydrates intake. In such cases, conventional brushing of teeth can’t eliminate the unpleasant smell ( Whitney and Rolfes, 2018) . The only remedy for the complication is to reduce proteins consumptions, increase water intake, and chew gums to reduce the odor ( Whitney and Rolfes, 2018)

High-protein diets may also cause constipation. Usually, the proteins inhibit the intake of food nutrients which are rich in fiber such as vitamins and carbohydrates. The low fiber in the body leads to constipation. People who are intolerant to lactose may also experience diarrhea which may lead to dehydration.
