A keen look at department of security strategic plans in the past years reveals that, they do a good job of adhering to the top national security concerns and how the United States will handle those concerns. One of the top national security concerns as highlighted in the Strategic Plan of 2012-2016 is prevention of terrorist attacks. In the plan, the department of security recognizes that, despite its efforts to prevent the nation from terrorism attacks since the September 11, 2001 attacks, there is still work remaining (Homeland Security, 2012). The department of security plan is to: understand the threat, deter and disrupt terrorist operations, protect the nation against terrorist capabilities, engage communities and stop the spread of violent extremism (Homeland Security, 2012). The United States is determined to handle the aforementioned concerns through collection, analysis and gathering of any information regarding emerging threats. The department of security is determined to disrupt execution, and rehearsals of any malicious actors. The nation aims at deterring domestic extremism and any radicalization activities.
The strategic plan of Fiscal Years 2008–2013 indicates that, the department of homeland security gave priority the need to protect United States from dangerous persons. To achieve this objective, the department of security aimed at doing several things: achieving effective control of the borders, enforce immigration laws and protecting the interior, strengthening screening of workers and travelers, and improving security through enhancing immigration services (Homeland Security, 2008). To handle the afore-listed concerns, the United States decided to empower security within borders in the air, water and land. The department of security resolved to improve their systems for processing all the immigrants and visitors coming into the country. They opted to use screening, and biometric tools to boost the mobility and security of all travelers (Steinhardt, 2010).

In overall, it is obvious that the strategic plans by the department of homeland security do a good job of ensuring top security concerns are adhered to. Top security concern in the 2012-2016 strategic plans was on preventing terrorist attacks, while the 2008–2013 strategic plans placed prevention of US borders against dangerous persons as its priority.
