Leadership is the capability to influence other or the followers towards specific set goals and objectives. An effective leader inspires their followers making them satisfied and highly productive. Participative leadership is one of the leadership styles that I have witnessed being used in our organization. This type of leadership engages team members in major decision making processes with an aim of achieving a mutual conclusion. These type of leaders are relation-oriented.
Relation-oriented behavior aims at human relations components of management. Leaders who show this kind of behavior are highly considerate and sensitive to his/her subordinates irrespective of their position or background ( Uhl-Bien et al. 2014). They focus on making sure that everything is pleasant and satisfying for the followers. These managers achieve this by engaging the subordinate in setting up organizational goals, listening to all and respecting others as work team colleagues ( Uhl-Bien et al. 2014). Also, these type of leaders defend their followers, welcome ideas and consult others on key issues. To a considerable extent the leader functions as a facilitator within a team.

Participative leadership is highly beneficial in that it creates a room for the development of leaders within the organization over time ( Uhl-Bien et al. 2014). The organization's top management prefer this type of leadership style since it involves active involvement of all the team members enabling them to show their creativity, capabilities, and talents ( Uhl-Bien et al. 2014). Moreover, participative leadership elevates a variety of possibilities for the team since all the members are involved in key decision-making process. This kind of leadership further creates a sense of belongingness and acceptance and morale among the staff.
In conclusion, participative leadership style engages all the employees in the major decision-making processes. These leaders are relation-oriented whose major focus is to ensure that all the employees are satisfied, motivated, respected, listened to and even defended if the need be. It embraces skills and talent for every member to be used in reaching the best decision, which is advantageous.
