Dignity is the quality of an individual, sometimes seen in their behavior, that makes them worthy of respect. The main philosophical foundation of human rights expressed in the UN Charter and other universal declaration documents is founded on human dignity. Various practices violate human dignity. Of these, rape, torture, and absolute poverty resonate most with me. Rape is a horrible practice that violates both human rights and dignity. Victims of rape suffer from physical and mental integrity violations that may present as fear, humiliation, and/or shame. Rape resonates most with me because it violates the victim’s right to private life and the right to be free from torture. It is a form of inhuman treatment and sex discrimination towards the victim. Furthermore, it results in the violation of the victim’s right to private life.

Torture is a dignity violation as it consists of a perverted relationship between the victim and the perpetrator. Torture is a horrible practice that results in violating the victim’s rights. While some agree to torture when trying to avert major disasters, I would not result in any form of torture for whatever reason. As a dignity violation, torture resonates most with me because although it may be goal-oriented, it results in the physical and mental suffering of the victim. Moreover, one is often never able to influence the course of events even when they cooperate, which further prolongs their suffering.

Absolute poverty is another dignity violation that often results from the unintended acts and omissions of others. Absolute poverty leads individuals to have a hard time navigating life. Victims of absolute poverty may not be able to fully enjoy every right they have, such as bodily integrity. This dignity violation particularly resonates with me as poor people depend on others in a degrading manner. People feel humiliated when they have to beg for basic goods; thus, their claim to self-respect is violated.
