Wellness is termed as an active process of being aware and making choices aimed at achieving a fulfilling life. It is not just being free of illness but a dynamic process of growth and change. There are several dimensions of wellness including physical, emotional, spiritual, occupational, social, intellectual, environmental, and financial wellness (Abuse, 2015). All these philosophies are geared towards creating a healthy balance between the physical and inner relationship.

Social wellness is about relating well with others and nature through communication. It is about being able to relate well with others and expressing one’s opinions and feelings. Emotional wellness on the other hand is about being aware and in control of one’s reactions, feelings, emotions, and cognition (Abuse, 2015). It is about getting in touch with one’s feelings and emotions so as to be able to cope with emotional stresses. Spiritual wellness involves being appreciative of life and natural forces in the world. It is the understanding of the reason, motive, and meaning of the human life. Contrary to this, occupational wellness is about achieving career satisfaction, finances, and skills ( Miller, 2014) . Physical wellness is about taking care of oneself through nutrition, physical activity, and self-care. Intellectual wellness involves engagement in mental and creative activities that stimulate assimilation of new knowledge. Environmental wellness involves being aware of factors affecting the environment and helping to reduce these factors in order to preserve the environment.

There are many challenges in trying o achieve wellness. For physical wellness, these challenges may be lack of enough funds to afford proper nutrition and lack of time to exercise. For social wellness, racism, and rejection could present a challenge. Inability to adapt to changes could also be a challenge to wellness ( Miller, 2014) .

Learning about the philosophies of wellness has helped me better analyze myself and work towards achieving optimal wellness. Through learning about the philosophies, I am better able to work hard and balance the different sections of my life and this has made me a better person, friend, sister, and human being.
