The Dinner Party was a piece of art that was assembled to deal with the issue of the omission of women from the historical record. Women who made worthy contributions to the society were to be recognized through the Dinner Party art. According to The Art Story (2019), recognition of women's efforts was vital as throughout history men always sidelined the efforts of women. The Dinner Party is made up of gold chalices, napkins with gold edges, porcelain plates that are hand-painted from China. Additionally, the table is on top of the heritage floor made up of luster-glazed tiles. Gold forms the most dominant color for inscribing the names of the various women. The media are used for inscribing the names of the 1038 women according to what roles they played in the society ( Gotthardt, 2018). Each woman had unique characteristics that led to their recognition. To be part of The Dinner Party, a woman must have impacted society in a positive way, and the media serves to reflect just the exact roles that they played.
I chose this artwork because I strongly believe in the fact that women have been sidelined by men despite their enormous contributions to society. The recognition of women is an important aspect that has a lot of importance. Remembrance of the contributions of women should be given as much recognition as that of men. Weber (2018) explains that the artwork implies that women were oppressed so much at the time when it was made. Despite huge contributions from the women, they were always overlooked by the male-dominated society. The Dinner Party teaches us that history writing was male-dominated (Cascone 2017). However, females were looked down upon despite their sincere efforts to rival the men. The bias in history writing comes to light in the Dinner Party as it serves as affirmative action.
