Erwin, S. R. (2017). The Effects of Domestic Violence on Children.

Domestic violence refers to the victimization, domination, intimidation, and coercion of an individual by emotional, physical, and sexual means within an intimate relationship. According to Erwin (2017), domestic violence is mostly meted on married women and negatively affect children. Moreover, domestic violence psychologically and physically affects victims who do not actively participate but those who witness, such as children (Erwin, 2017). The paper focuses on describing my reaction and what I learned from the issues discussed in the domestic violence article.

Things I learned from the Article.

On reading the article, I learned that in most of the cases, children are usually witnesses to instances of domestic violence and therefore affecting their psychological well-being. In addition, domestic violence is usually a major contributor to the ill health of children and women. It causes serious outcomes in women, such as sexual and reproductive health issues, as well as their physical and mental health. Moreover, domestic violence causes depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, permanent disabilities, as well as gynaecological problems among women. Additionally, domestic violence causes emotional distress, sleeping disturbances, and eating disorders among children. Therefore, domestic violence causes negative impacts on the victim, family, children, as well as the community. For instance, perpetrators of domestic violence end up in prison, therefore reaping off the vibrant workforce within a community.

Moreover, domestic violence increases the rates of alcohol and other drug abuse as well as lead to mental health problems. Furthermore, children who are brought up in violent families do not learn about respectful and positive relationships since they lack a role model. Besides, children suffer low self-esteem and become a target for bullying. They also find it difficult to concentrate, especially in school, therefore performing poorly in their academics ( Erwin, 2017) . Children from violent families also have less empathy and care for other people. The main effects of domestic violence on a family include regular household conflicts, police and child protection involvement, as well as frequent moving and separation to avoid instances of abuse.

Moreover, I learned that the main causes of domestic violence in families include having low self-worth, influence from an individual's peers, and experiences of neglect, poverty, and access to weapons. For instance, children who are brought up in families with instances of domestic violence are likely to become violent when they grow up ( Almış et al., 2020) . Also, access to weapons such as guns further increases the risk of an individual causing violence to one's partner. Furthermore, poverty causes domestic violence in various ways. For instance, when the breadwinner in a family is unable to provide food, clothing, and decent housing, the rest of the family members are likely to be disrespectful therefore leading to domestic violence ( Gosal, 2018) . Men also suffer from domestic violence, especially from their partners. However, issues of domestic violence among men are not commonly publicized, leaving many unattended men in an abusive relationship.
