Directed by Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko is a film that has a fascinating set-up and development. The movie is about sacrifice and heroism, decorated with disturbing imagery. As the film builds, there are numerous twists and turns that reveals how the plot wheel is revolving around different characters. It is noteworthy that the audience is able to see the characters clearly and freshly in each scene throughout the movie, as the director has not reduced them to formulas that are had to construe. By polarizing characters, Kelly has been able to demonstrate various emotions, for instance, although Donnie’s parents who although are loving, they are perpetually confused. Also, Donnie’s sister is struggling between her identity as a child as well as an adult. The director has specifically focused on Jake Gyllenhaal character, thus making it possible to elicit intriguing form of disturbance. The character sets a nice tone for the movie as he is more quixotic than eccentric, and more curious than frightened.

The most interesting aspect about the movie is the incredible emotional range that manages to inspire dread, , love, tears, hope, and joy at different scenes without making the audience realize the contradiction between these mood states. Nevertheless, the movie closes with emptiness, as the control that Donnie had fades away, leaving the audience with suspense. Eventually, Donnie is the character that gets away. The performances by the characters in the film are exquisite. Notably, the characters have demonstrated individual amazing talent. From the very first scene, the audience is able to see the magic when Donnie wakes up and the story unfolds like a dream. Overall, Kelly has been able to tickle the ear and the eye, particularly during Donnie’s aural and visual hallucinations. The visuals and audios are well supported by a truly emotional score and thought provoking.
