Schools, mostly high schools have always been a center for nurturing students’ talents through the various games availed to them for participation. However, there is a tendency of students who are into games concentrating more on the career and giving their studies less attention. It is on the same basis that state associations came up with minimum academic requirements when enrolling students for athletic games.
One of the measures taken by the New York States Public High School Athletic Associations is the minimum academic requirements in which an athlete is required to have a pass in a number of school subjects each semester to be deemed eligible for athletics (New York State Public High School Athletic Association, 2018). Another measure is the checkpoint for fame. This requires that athletes behave in a certain way with their rights as celebrities moderated. They are not to partner with any consumer brands. A case study would be LeBron’s ban from athletics after he took gifts from a brand. This is supposed to keep athletes concentrated on their school life (Wise, 2003).

The Henrico County School Board considered GPA requirements for student-athletes in which they are expected to maintain a certain level of GPA in their studies in addition to subject performance. This move helps them secure college slots (Burns, 2018). The Johnson City Central School District Athletic Eligibility rules require that a student is enrolled into athletics at the ninth grade. This measure is supposed to keep the students concentrated on their school work first for the first eight grades before getting into athletics. Also, once an athlete, they are supposed to take at least four subjects (Johnson City Central School District, 2018).
These rules, by the NYSPHSAA, are sufficient to meet the intended goals of promoting both the academic goals of a student while at the same time building on their talents and skills. But most importantly, they help shape the young stars and instill in them values that will be significant in helping them deal with their celebrity status.
