The consequences of substance abuse, the risks, treatment, and recovery process depend on gender, ethnicity, race, age, sexual orientation, and many other factors. For example, women are at risks of suffering from disorders as a result of substance abuse, hence, can only be understood well in the context where the influences of race, ethnicity, gender, education, culture, age, social status, sexual orientation, geographical location, amongst many other factors converge. Markedly, knowing the groups that women belong to is key to designing and implementing the most effective programs for women substance abuse treatment. Furthermore, culturally responsive and gender appropriate medical care improves the outcome of clients disorders from drug addiction and all other types of healthcare. The prevalence of certain disorders depends on the group differences such gender and age.

The primary responsibility of a social worker is to serve the clients best interest, and so they try to abide by the professional organization code of ethics, which is the guide of their actions. Justifiably, just like any other professionals, social workers face some ethical dilemmas, which involve conflicts between them and the moral principles. Arguably, confidentiality is one of the most common ethical dilemmas that are experienced by social workers. The right to self-determination versus that of confidentiality, for example in suicidal clients’ cases. Social workers may be unable to respect the clients’ privacy and therefore, disclose a clients’ information without their consent, to protect the client and the public. The difference in values and morals is the other dilemma faced by social workers. In essence, social workers have an internal set of morals and value systems in spite of their efforts to keep in check with those of their clients. Sometimes, social workers are challenged by situations where their set of morals conflict with clients’. For instance, social workers who hold moral values about abortion are likely to be in a dilemma to assist pregnant teens that wish to carry out abortions.
