A roadblock is defined as something that prevents the progress or blocks the achievement of an objective. Mental barriers in workplaces often interfere with the process of solving a problem and making active choices in life. Mental set, the first roadblock, which is defined as the propensity to depend on strategies that were fruitful in the past. For example, when an individual enters a grocery store by pushing the door open and when leaving the building, still pushes the door open from inside instead of pulling it.

Another barricade to problem-solving in the workplace is practical stability, which is the inability of an individual to see familiar objects that can be applied in new ways. For instance, when working in the office and then you notice dust on your desk. Instead of using a brush and a piece of paper which is found in the office, the individual opts for a dustpan and a broom that he or she does not have. Lastly, another blockade to effective decision making is easy distractions by irrelevant material.

Some of the crucial steps in becoming an innovative problem solver include:

Identification of the problem – this is the starting point of recognizing the issue that needs to be fixed though questioning. It involves investing time to go through the situation thoroughly. It is the point where the warning sign is quarantined from the causes.

Determining the origin of the problem – after the problem has been figured out, an individual needs to find out what was behind it and how it can be quantified.

Obtaining several solutions – one aspect of being a good problem solver is thinking out of the ordinary and coming up with as many answers as possible. And in the process, the researcher should avoid mental sets as much as possible by focusing on each question carefully.

Pick out the best solution – The researcher should then pick out the best solution, one that is technically practical and which resources can be obtained with ease. Next, the answer should be implemented, and after some time, the success of the solution should be investigated.
